Flagstaff sits off the side of the San Francisco Peaks which boasts the highest mountain in Arizona. The region is known as the "high desert" which is like an oasis of forests surrounded by true, dry desert in every direction.
 
As a result of the surrounding deserts and being far above, the sunsets literally light up the skies. The visibility goes on forever where you can sometimes see as far as a hundred miles away. In the fall as rain clouds move through the region the colors are beyond amazing as variations from blue to purple to orange to yellow can be seen edging in and among the cloud formations including full spectrum double rainbows.
